Definition and Primary Function of Pool Salt
Pool salt is essentially sodium chloride (NaCl), specially refined for swimming pool systems. Its main function is not to directly disinfect pool water, but to provide 'raw material' for the salt chlorine generator, which is part of the saltwater pool system. Thus, pool salt acts as a source for the pool to produce its own chlorine. This modern approach offers a more eco-friendly and user-friendly alternative to traditional chlorine use, significantly simplifying pool maintenance.
Softer Water and Comfortable Swimming Experience
Saltwater feels much less irritating to the skin and eyes compared to traditionally chlorinated pools. The water is described as 'silky' or 'soft,' preventing swimmers from experiencing the harsh chlorine smell or skin dryness after exiting the water. This feature provides a significant advantage, especially for individuals with sensitive skin and children, enhancing the enjoyment of swimming and allowing for longer periods in the pool. Saltwater pools also reduce the risk of allergic reactions, offering a healthier swimming environment.
Calculating the Required Salt Amount (PPM)
For a salt chlorine generator to operate efficiently, the salinity level in the pool water must be at a specific level. This level varies from manufacturer to manufacturer but is generally measured in parts per million (PPM) and is desired to be between 3000 and 4000 PPM. This ratio is much lower than seawater; it is similar to a slightly salty tear. You must calculate how much salt to add based on your pool's volume. For example, for a system targeting 4000 PPM, approximately 4 kilograms of salt are needed per cubic meter (1000 liters) of water. A 50 cubic meter pool would require about 200 kilograms of salt for initial setup.
Purity Level and Quality Standards
The main factor determining the price and quality of pool salt is its purity level. Pool salt should not contain iodine, anti-caking additives, or minerals like iron, which can damage chlorine generator cells. Highly refined salts (99.5% or higher purity), which are not food-grade but of technical purity, are ideal for this purpose. While lower purity industrial salts may seem cheaper initially, the foreign substances they contain can cause more damage to the generator and pool surface in the long run, leading to higher costs. Therefore, choosing high-quality and pure pool salt saves money in the long term.
