Pool Floater: Basic Definition and Importance
A pool floater is one of the simplest, most common, and most effective chemical dispensing devices used in swimming pool maintenance. Typically made of durable plastic, this device floats freely on the water, gradually and controllably releasing chemicals placed inside into the pool water. This equipment helps automate the pool's disinfection process, saving pool owners the hassle of manually adding chlorine every day. However, the term 'floater' can have multiple meanings in pool terminology. Therefore, understanding exactly what this device is and what it does begins with distinguishing it from other pool accessories.
Definition and Function of a Chemical Pool Floater
A pool floater is a plastic container, usually with adjustable openings, designed to hold slow-dissolving disinfectants like chlorine tablets on the water's surface and release them slowly into the water. Its body has an air gap that allows it to float without sinking. At the bottom, it features adjustable slits or holes that permit water to enter, dissolve the tablet, and allow the dissolved chlorine to exit. Its primary purpose is to ensure that the disinfectant continues to mix with the water even when the pool pump is not running (when circulation stops). This helps maintain a minimum chlorine level in the pool 24/7.
Slow and Controlled Release of Chlorine Tablets for Continuous Disinfection
The main task of a chemical floater is to safely and effectively introduce chlorine tablets to the pool water. Slow-dissolving chlorine tablets are one of the most popular ways to add disinfectant to pool water. The floater keeps this concentrated tablet on the water's surface, allowing the water to gradually 'lick' and dissolve the tablet as it circulates. This ensures a slow and steady release of chlorine into the water over a week or even longer. The adjustable openings at the bottom of the floater allow control over how much chlorine mixes with the water. Furthermore, since a pool's filtration system and pump typically operate only for specific hours each day, chlorine release into the water stops when the pump is off. The pool floater, however, floats freely on the water, ensuring that chlorine release continues at a minimum level, whether the pump is running or not. This prevents the pool's chlorine level from dropping dangerously low, creating a 24-hour continuous protective shield.
Filling Tablets and Adjusting Flow Rate
Using a floater is quite simple, but it requires careful adjustment for correct dosage. The floater typically has a screw-on or lockable top cap. This cap is opened, and an appropriate amount of slow-dissolving chlorine tablets is placed inside, depending on the pool's size and chlorine needs. It's crucial to remember that granular or powdered chlorine should never be placed in a floater; these chemicals dissolve quickly and do not align with the floater's dosing mechanism. At the bottom of the floater, there is usually a series of adjustable slits or holes that can be opened or closed by twisting. This is the dosage adjustment, allowing you to control how much chlorine mixes with the water. If your pool is small or has low chlorine requirements, these slits are set to a more 'closed' position. If the pool is large, in hot weather, or heavily used, the slits are opened further to increase chlorine release. The correct setting is usually found through several days of test kit measurements.
