What is an Overflow Pool?
An overflow pool is a type of swimming pool that manages water circulation and surface cleaning by the principle of water overflowing in a controlled manner from all sides of the pool. The ripple or displacement created by a swimmer entering the pool causes water to overflow from the edges into perimeter channels, known as overflow channels. These channels are covered with special pool grates that can be walked on and filter the water.
The primary purpose of this system is to remove surface contaminants such as leaves, dust, pollen, and oil from the pool as quickly and efficiently as possible. Since water overflows from the entire perimeter of the pool, it provides much more effective surface cleaning compared to skimmer systems. This is a vital advantage, especially for public and heavily used commercial pools.
Overflow pools are also a requirement for Olympic pool standards. This is because they prevent the reflection of waves generated during competitions within the pool, ensuring an equal and fair swimming surface across all lanes. The wave hits the overflow channel and loses its energy.
How Does an Overflow Pool System Work?
The operation of an overflow pool system is more complex than a skimmer system, relying on a cyclical process consisting of three main stages: Overflow, balancing, and filtration.
Advantages of an Overflow Pool System
Overflow pools offer numerous distinct advantages, especially when compared to skimmer systems. These benefits often justify the higher initial investment.
Superior Surface Cleaning: This is the greatest advantage of an overflow pool. Water overflowing from all edges ensures that surface contaminants like leaves, oil, pollen, and insects are continuously and rapidly removed from the system. This provides clearer and more hygienic water quality.
Excellent Aesthetic Appeal: The water level being flush with the pool edge creates a smooth, seamless, and luxurious 'mirror' or 'infinity' look. This allows the pool to integrate better with its surrounding architecture.
Effective Wave Control: Especially in pools with many swimmers or those used for competitions, generated waves hit the overflow channels and lose their energy. This helps the pool remain calmer and creates a fair competitive environment for athletes.
More Homogeneous Circulation: The clean water, typically returned from the bottom, ensures a vertical movement of water from bottom to top. This helps pool chemicals and heat distribute more evenly to every corner of the pool.
Disadvantages of an Overflow Pool System
Despite the advantages offered by overflow pools, there are also some disadvantages that need to be considered.
Higher Construction Cost: Overflow systems are significantly more expensive than skimmer systems. Not only does the construction cost of the perimeter overflow channel and grates increase the total cost, but also the mandatory underground balance tank adds substantially to the overall expense.
More Complex Construction Process: These systems require more precise engineering and leveling. The overflow channel must be at a perfect level around the entire pool perimeter; otherwise, water will only overflow from lower areas.
Greater Maintenance Needs: The overflow channels located beneath the grates can become clogged over time with dirt, algae, and leaf debris. These channels and grates need to be regularly removed and cleaned. Additionally, the balance tank requires periodic cleaning and maintenance.
Increased Water Surface Area: The overflow channel and balance tank increase the total volume of water and the surface area where water comes into contact with air. This can lead to greater evaporation and heat loss, especially in heated pools.
What is an overflow pool?
An overflow pool is a pool circulation system where the water level is flush with the pool edge, and water overflows into perimeter channels, flowing to a balance tank.
