What is a Bath Bomb?
A bath bomb is essentially a solid mixture created by compressing two main components: baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) and citric acid. These two ingredients do not react with each other when dry. However, when dropped into water, they combine in the presence of water to initiate a chemical reaction.
How to Use a Bath Bomb?
Using a bath bomb in a standard bathtub is extremely simple. The tub is filled with warm water, the bath bomb is dropped in, and you watch it dissolve. Once the bomb has fully dissolved and dispersed into the water, you can enter the tub for an enjoyable bath session.
However, if you plan to use this product in a hot tub, the process must be managed much more carefully. The bomb should be dropped into the water and allowed to fully dissolve before the hot tub's motor and jets are activated. While the bomb dissolves, it is crucial to prevent solid particles from entering the motor's intake strainer. Many experts advise against using bath bombs in hot tubs altogether due to these risks.
Types and Ingredients of Bath Bombs
The market offers thousands of different types of bath bombs, providing various sensory experiences and skin care benefits.
Is Using Bath Bombs Safe for Hot Tubs?
Short answer: No, most bath bombs are not safe for hot tubs and pose serious risks. Hot tubs are not designed to deal with the solid and oily residues that these types of cosmetic products create.
How to Choose a Hot Tub-Friendly Bath Bomb?
If, despite these risks, you are determined to use a bath bomb in your hot tub, you need to choose products that will cause the least damage to your system.
When selecting a "hot tub-friendly" bath bomb, pay attention to the following features:
Must Be Oil-Free: Opt for light, oil-free formulas that disperse more easily in water, instead of heavy skin-moisturizing oils (cocoa, shea).
Must Not Contain Solid Particles: Absolutely avoid bath bombs that contain flower petals, oats, glitter, confetti, or any other undissolved solid matter.
Must Be Non-Staining: Choose products with less coloring or those labeled "non-staining" instead of highly pigmented, "water-dyeing" bombs.
Must Be Salt-Based: Epsom salt or sea salt-based products leave less residue in the system compared to oil-based products, as they dissolve completely in water.
Hot Tub Maintenance After Use
If you have used a bath bomb in your hot tub, you need to perform immediate maintenance as soon as the session ends to prevent damage to your system:
Completely Drain the Water: Water used with a bath bomb should not be left in the system. The hot tub water must be completely drained after the session.
Clean the Surface: The inner surface of the tub, especially the waterline, should be wiped with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner to remove oil and dye residues.
Clean (or Replace) the Filter: The filter cartridge should be removed, rinsed with pressurized water, and, if necessary, degreased with special filter cleaning solutions.
Circulate Clean Water Through the System: The hot tub should be filled with clean water, and the jets run for a few minutes to flush out any residues from the plumbing system. If necessary, the water can be drained again after this process.
What is a bath bomb?
A bath bomb is a compressed cosmetic product that fizzes, dissolves, and releases color, fragrance, or skin-moisturizing oils into the water when dropped in.
