Heat Transfer Principle and Efficiency
A pool heat pump is a machine that collects free heat energy from the outdoor environment, concentrates it, and transfers this heat to the pool water. Essentially, it does not "produce" heat; it "moves" it from one place to another. This device operates on the exact opposite principle of an air conditioner. While an air conditioner absorbs heat from inside your room and expels it to the outside air to cool the interior, a heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air and transfers it to the pool water to heat the pool. This "heat transfer" method is significantly more efficient than the "resistive heating" method used by an electric heater and leads to substantial energy savings.
Standard (On/Off) Heat Pumps
Standard heat pumps operate with traditional "on-off" technology. In these devices, the compressor has only two modes: running at 100% power or being completely off. When the pool water drops below the set temperature, the compressor engages at full power, heats the water, and then completely shuts off once the desired temperature is reached. This continuous stop-start operation can lead to higher energy consumption and more wear and tear on the motor, potentially increasing long-term maintenance costs.
What is Coefficient of Performance (COP)?

COP is a ratio that indicates how many kilowatts of heat energy the device produces for every 1 kilowatt of electricity it consumes. For example, a heat pump with a COP of 6 consumes 1 kilowatt of electricity, adds 5 kilowatts of heat from the air, and transfers a total of 6 kilowatts of heat energy to the pool. An electric heater, on the other hand, always has a COP of 1. The higher the COP value, the more efficient the device is and the more energy it saves. Therefore, paying attention to the COP value when making a selection is crucial.
Power Capacity (kW/BTU)
The first and most important factor determining the price is the pump's power. As the heating capacity (kW or BTU) of the device increases, meaning its ability to heat larger pools improves, the size of the compressor and heat exchanger grows, and its price naturally increases. There is a significant price difference between a 5-kilowatt pump for a small pool and a 25-kilowatt pump for a large pool. Choosing a pump with appropriate capacity for your pool's size is crucial for both efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
