First Step in Sauna Construction: Accurate Sizing
When deciding to build a sauna for a home or commercial space, the first and most important question to answer, even before aesthetics and model, is: what should the sauna dimensions be? Correct measurement not only determines if the sauna will fit the space but also how quickly it will heat up, how much energy it will consume, how much it will cost, and most importantly, how comfortable it will be – a fundamental engineering decision.
An incorrect volume calculation can lead to insufficient heater power or an inefficient heating cycle. A sauna that is too large will incur unnecessary energy costs, while one that is too small will offer a claustrophobic and uncomfortable experience. "The ideal sauna size for you" is about finding the perfect balance between the available space, your budget, and the number of people who will use the sauna.
Accurate Measurement of Existing Space and Air Gaps
The first step is to precisely measure the room or area where the sauna will be installed. For a home sauna, the minimum space requirement is generally around 1 square meter. However, when taking measurements, it's important to consider not only the external footprint of the sauna but also the necessary clearances around it.
To ensure proper ventilation of the sauna and to protect its exterior wooden surfaces from moisture, it is recommended to leave a few centimeters of air gap between the sauna walls and the existing building walls. Additionally, remember that the sauna door will open outwards, requiring space for its swing. These details are crucial for a smooth installation process.
Home Saunas: Ideal Dimensions for 1-2 and 3-4 People
The internal dimensions of a sauna are determined by how many people will comfortably use it at the same time. The most popular home sauna sizes are generally designed for one person to lie down comfortably or two people to sit.
Minimum Size: Dimensions like 120 x 110 centimeters offer the narrowest space solution for a single person to sit. Ideal Single Person (Lying Down): For one person to lie down fully, one side should be at least 180 or 190 centimeters. For example, 190 x 120 centimeters is an ideal single-person lying sauna. Ideal Two-Person (Sitting): For two people to sit facing each other or side-by-side, dimensions such as 150 x 150 centimeters or 160 x 140 centimeters are usually sufficient. 3-4 person family saunas typically feature L-shaped or opposing benches and offer more movement space. These sizes allow a family or small group of friends to have a session simultaneously. Typical dimensions are around 200 x 150 centimeters or 200 x 200 centimeters.
Sauna Bench Dimensions and Seating/Lying Ergonomics
The internal dimensions of the sauna not only determine the heater power but also whether it offers an ergonomic seating and lying area. There are standard measurements for sauna benches or bunks. For a person to sit comfortably, the minimum depth of the bench should be between 40 and 50 centimeters. If you plan to lie down frequently in the sauna, the internal wall length should be at least 190 centimeters for a comfortable lying position.
Benches are usually built in two tiers. The distance between the lower bench and the floor, and between the lower and upper benches, should typically be between 40 and 45 centimeters. This ensures both a comfortable sitting position and prevents those on the lower bench from hitting their heads on the upper bench. Correct bench dimensions are a crucial detail that directly affects your sauna enjoyment.
