Rooms made of plasterboard, fiber cement board, or other non-wood materials are unsuitable for saunas. Furthermore, considering the indispensable need for showering as part of the sauna experience, a shower area should be planned as close as possible to the sauna exit. This allows users to quickly cleanse their perspiring bodies, ensuring a hygienic transition and enhancing overall comfort.
Ideal Sauna Dimensions Based on User Capacity
The dimensions of sauna rooms are directly determined by the number of users and the intended purpose. Therefore, during the sauna design phase, the target user group must be thoroughly analyzed, and appropriate sizes and material quantities should be calculated accordingly. Saunas for individual use typically occupy an area of 1 square meter, while family saunas ideally measure around 4 square meters with a preferred height of 2.30 meters. Mixed saunas in commercial establishments or spas should have a minimum area of 6 square meters and a height of 2.50 meters. However, these dimensions can expand up to 30 square meters depending on user capacity. Correct sizing not only provides a comfortable experience but is also crucial for energy efficiency.

The selection of wood and other materials for sauna construction is paramount for the sauna's durability, aesthetics, and user health. Woods must be highly resistant to high heat and moisture. In this context, equivalent and fir trees are among the most suitable types for sauna construction. For wooden frames, single-piece materials typically measuring 5x5 or 5x10 cm, extending from floor to ceiling, should be preferred. It is crucial for sauna paneling and other wooden surfaces to be knot-free to prevent heat transfer and resin leakage. Non-resinous wood species, especially Canadian Hemlock, Finnish Spruce, and Californian Redwood, are ideal choices for the sauna environment. These woods offer both an aesthetic appearance and ensure long-lasting, healthy use.
Importance and Methods of Sauna Insulation
Just as important as the wood and other materials used in the sauna room's interior structure, external insulation plays a vital role in the sauna's efficiency and comfort. Effective insulation preserves the high heat and humidity within the sauna, minimizing energy loss. Typically, 5 cm thick foiled glass wool is preferred as an insulation material. This material offers high performance in thermal insulation and creates a moisture barrier, preventing damage to the wooden structure. Additionally, by adhering extra insulation materials like styrofoam between the wooden paneling and frames, not only thermal insulation but also sound insulation can be achieved. This transforms the sauna into a peaceful and quiet relaxation area, isolated from the external environment.

Beyond the main materials used in sauna construction, the interior equipment directly impacts the quality and comfort of the sauna experience. Seating benches should be made from special wood types that are resin-free and do not retain heat, ensuring users can sit comfortably and safely. Mats and other seating arrangements significantly enhance the overall comfort level of the sauna. Sauna seating layouts are typically designed in 2 or 3 tiers, offering seating options at different temperature levels and optimizing air circulation. Choosing easily cleanable and hygienic materials for mats provides practicality for general sauna cleaning and maintenance. The right equipment selection maximizes the enjoyment of your sauna.
Sauna Maintenance and Hygiene Rules
Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the long-lasting and hygienic use of a sauna room. The sauna should be designed with ease of cleaning in mind. The floor, in particular, must be cleaned regularly, at least once a week. Otherwise, accumulated water and sweat residues can lead to unpleasant odors and bacterial growth over time, negatively impacting user comfort and health. Wooden paneling and other wooden surfaces should also be wiped down weekly with special disinfectants to prevent the formation of bacteria, microbes, and fungi. These regular maintenance routines ensure that the sauna always provides a fresh, clean, and healthy environment.
