Definition and Function of Pool Membrane
The pool membrane is the most critical structural layer used to ensure the watertightness of a swimming pool. What makes a pool waterproof is not the poured concrete itself, but this flexible and durable insulation layer applied on or within the concrete. These special liners used for pool waterproofing are specifically designed to withstand the constant pressure of tons of water, pool chemicals, and ground movements. This extends the life of the pool and prevents potential water leaks.
Definition and Purpose of Pool Membrane
A pool membrane is a flexible, waterproof barrier that prevents water from leaking out of the pool's reinforced concrete body or prefabricated panels. Concrete, by nature, has a porous structure and can develop capillary cracks over time. The membrane bridges these cracks and seals the pores, ensuring the water remains within the pool. These systems differ from standard waterproofing materials used in buildings. Pool membranes must have high chemical and physical resistance to continuous water pressure (positive pressure), chlorine, ozone, and UV rays. These features guarantee the pool's longevity and safety.
Types of PVC Membranes (Liner)
PVC membrane is one of the most common and versatile materials used in pool waterproofing. Also known as 'liner coating,' this system can be applied in two different ways: Ready (Bag) Liner, which is a single-piece, bag-shaped coating custom-produced in the factory according to pool dimensions, commonly used in prefabricated pools. Reinforced PVC Membrane is a thicker, polyester-mesh-reinforced membrane applied on-site. It comes in rolls and is joined by hot air welding machines inside the pool. In both methods, the PVC membrane simultaneously serves as both the waterproofing layer and the final aesthetic coating of the pool, without an additional ceramic coating underneath.
Details of PVC (Liner) Membrane Application
The application of reinforced PVC membrane is a specialized process. After the pool surface is cleaned and a protective geotextile felt is laid, 1.5 mm membrane rolls are placed inside the pool. The panels are overlapped and fused together using special hot air welding machines, creating a watertight, monolithic body. Complex details such as corners and steps are completed by cutting and welding by hand on-site. In ready-made liner application, the bag-shaped liner is hung on locking profiles at the pool edge, and a vacuum machine is used to extract air from behind the liner, ensuring the coating adheres to the surface. These methods offer a fast and effective insulation solution.
Membrane Selection Based on Project Type
Choosing the right membrane for your pool depends on the pool type and your budget. For a newly constructed reinforced concrete pool, a liquid applied insulation with a ceramic finish is generally preferred as a long-lasting solution. For renovating an old pool, especially if there are leaks in the existing coating, the fastest and most guaranteed solution is usually a PVC liner coating. The pool can be renovated in 1-2 days by laying felt over the existing ceramics and welding a PVC membrane. This offers a practical solution that saves both time and cost.
