The Essential Function of a Pool Vacuum Hose
A pool vacuum hose is a crucial component of a manual pool vacuum system, designed for cleaning the bottom of a swimming pool. This specialized hose creates a flexible connection between the vacuum head at the pool's bottom and the suction point of the pool's circulation system. Its primary role is to transmit the vacuum power generated by the pool pump to the vacuum head, drawing dirty water and debris into the filter system. Unlike a robotic pool cleaner, a manual system relies on the pool's existing filtration infrastructure, using it like a powerful vacuum cleaner. The pool pump generates suction to draw water through the skimmer. When the vacuum hose is connected to the skimmer, this vacuum power is directed to the vacuum head at the end of the hose. The user guides this head along the pool floor with a telescopic pole, and debris such as sand, dust, and leaves are sucked up through the hose, transported to the skimmer, then to the pump's pre-filter, and finally to the sand filter.
Standard (Clamp-On) Hoses
This is the most common and economical type of pool hose. Typically blue or white, they are made from flexible polyethylene material with a spiral outer structure and are sold by the meter. Users purchase the length of hose required for their pool, such as 10 or 12 meters. Both ends of these hoses are usually plain, without cuffs. To connect the hose to the vacuum head or the skimmer's vacuum plate, a metal hose clamp is necessary. The clamp must be tightened very securely to prevent air leaks during vacuuming, which can compromise the efficiency of the cleaning process and potentially harm the pump. These hoses offer a cost-effective solution but require careful attention at connection points.
Calculating the Correct Length (Meters)
The length of your pool vacuum hose directly impacts your cleaning comfort and efficiency. The hose must be long enough to comfortably reach the farthest corner of the pool from its connection point at the skimmer or vacuum line, with an additional 1-2 meters of slack. A hose that is too short will prevent you from cleaning all areas, while an excessively long hose creates storage difficulties and reduces the pump's suction power. The pump struggles more to draw water through a longer hose, which weakens the suction at the vacuum head. The ideal length is the shortest measurement that meets your pool's needs, ensuring optimal performance without unnecessary bulk. This not only enhances cleaning effectiveness but also protects the pump's lifespan.
Connecting to the Pool Vacuum and Priming the Hose
The most critical step in using a manual pool vacuum is correctly connecting the hose to the system and completely removing all air from it. One end of the hose connects to the pool cleaning vacuum head, while the other end is inserted into the vacuum port inside the skimmer basket or a dedicated vacuum line inlet on the pool wall. Pool pumps are designed to pump water, not air. If air enters the plumbing line, it can cause the pump to lose prime or run dry, leading to severe damage to the pump's seal and motor within seconds. Therefore, completely priming the hose is vital. Before connecting the hose to the system, attach the vacuum head and pole to the hose and submerge the entire assembly into the pool. Place the free end of the hose against a clean water return jet (besi nozulu) inside the pool. With the pump running, the pressurized water from the jet will push all the air out of the hose through the vacuum head in the form of bubbles. Once you see no more bubbles emerging from the hose, it is fully filled with water. Finally, without removing the hose end from the water, slowly guide it to the skimmer basket area and firmly insert it into the vacuum port.
